Harmanus House (1748-1822) Added by jecharnley <http://www.ancestry.com/community/member/profile.aspx?cba=jecharnley>  on 6 Apr 2007 "The Frontiersmen of New York"  by Jeptha R. Simms. Albany, NY, 1883 "On some occasion during the war and believed to have been in 1778, John and Christopher  Bellinger, brothers, and Philip Harter, were on the flats between Fort Dayton and the river getting  hay. John Bellinger was some 25 years of age; his companions were several years younger. As  John was engaged in pitching hay into a window with a fork, and his friends in raking at a little  distance from him, a Tory, named HARMANUS HOUSE, and two Mohawk Indians appeared in a   corn field near the laborers. The latter having taken the precaution to carry their guns to the field,  had laid them upon the trunk of a windfallen tree near where they were at work.  "Christopher first discovered the foes approaching, and shouted the prophetic words of the  times-"The Indians!" John Bellinger was an uncommonly strong and courageous man, and withal  swift on foot. With uplifted fork he ran directly for the guns, quite as near to which was his Tory  foe; his brother and Harter at the same time fleeing for the fort, pursued by the Indians. As John  neared his own gun, House drew up to fire on him, but before doing so he called back his  comrades by a signal whistle. He then fired, and one of freedom's boldest champions was  weltering in his gore. "Christopher and Philip reached the fort in safety. There were other Indians concealed near the  field, as was afterwards understood, who dreaded the vengeance of John Bellinger more than that  of a score of ordinary men. The enemy obtained; with his scalp and the plunder of his person, the  three guns which the young men had taken to the field. The loss of this brave partisan was  severely felt in  the German Flats, for his was one of the master-spirits of that section, just suited to  the times. But,  like many noble young Americans, he was surprised and slain, either from envy or  the British value to a Tory neighbor of his scalp-lock. House called back his accomplices to assist him, fearing if he fired and missed his victim, and their guns were unloaded, his fate would be  sealed. He was well acquainted with Bellinger before the war. The remains of the fallen hero were  taken to the fort and buried with becoming respect. Facts from Adam Rasback, corroborated by  Frederick P. Bellinger, in 1845."

He seems to have started his military career on April 1, 1760, in Dutchess County, as a 5'11",  brown-haired 21 year-old from Tappan with a ruddy complexion, according to muster rolls. He  joined Captain Jacobus Swartwout's (sic) company during King Phillip's War, when he battled the  French and Indians alongside the British. Apparently he kept those Loyalist leanings and sided  with the British during the Revolution, as well.
Now, to be fair, Harmanus' scalping story might have been written a lot differently if the Loyalists  had prevailed. By all accounts, Harmanus was a brave, talented frontiersman. Before the War, he  had been a family favorite. Captain John Haus, the family hero on the Patriot side, is said in later  years to have always mentioned Harmanus "with regret." And Harmanus' Canadian descendants  are proud of their lineage to him.
After all, Loyalists were heavily persecuted during the war-they were tortured, tarred & feathered,  stoned, and made to "ride the rails" (dragged without pants along a sharp steel blade) on a good  day. And the reality is that they were just British subjects fighting an insurgency against their  chosen government-protecting their homeland, as we all would-but they lost the war, and to the  victors go the spoils, the land, the Simms historical books, and the Mel Gibson movie rights.  Simms was also known to bend the facts for dramatic effect, and, after all, "Harmanus" is a great  name for a villain (you can't beat "harm+anus" as a compound word). So who knows, maybe  Simms just used the coolest-sounding villain's name on the list of Mohawk Loyalists. -  comedyontap.com

But not all of the descendants of Johann prospered in the new country. With the American victory  also came the banishment of the Loyalists. In 1781 the newly formed State of New York began  the confiscation of Loyalist land, and on July 15, 1783, the holdings of George and Harmanus  House of the Canajoharie District of Tryon County were confiscated and auctioned at a Sheriff's  Sale. Claim of George to the British on August 30 said he joined them in 1777, served all the War  under Col. Butler in the Rangers; Had some Lands on the Mohawk, had no Lease but had lived on  them 15 years before the War, and had built a house. He only Claims for the Buildings 24£, he  had 4 horses & 2 Colts, Utensils, furniture, grain in the ground, all of which he left behind. The  Indians took some, the Rebels took the most. On July 14 of 1783, John Jurry House of the  Palatine District of Tryon County  also lost his land.  comedyontap.com

Notes for Catharine Mary House:  General Notes:

The most famous story of the two warring sides of the Haus family facing off again is recorded in  The Annals of The Forty: LEWIS HOUSE, listed above, was the grandson of Nicholas House. He  invaded Canada with the American Troops, and was taken prisoner at the Battle of Lundy's Lane.  He was sent to a prison camp in Canada, that happened to be near John House's farm at Cave  Springs in Clinton Township. John was the son of Harmanus Haus-the brother of Lewis'  grandfather.

The prisoners were allowed to go to the farm for water, and one day Lewis House, prisoner, met  CATHERINE HOUSE, granddaughter of Loyalist Harmanus House... and they fell in love.  Fortunately Harmanus wasn't around to see his granddaughter romanced by a United States  House, or Lewis might've suffered the same hayfield treatment as John Bellinger!!!
On June 16, 1818, the Reverend William Sampson of St. Andrew's Church, Grimsby, united the  young couple in marriage. Lewis remained in Canada, and eventually secured a piece of the  (other) House family farm. How can it be incest if you're from different countries, right? (In The House Family of the Mohawk <source/HFOTM.pdf>, Shaver just assumed that Lewis was the son  of John, Catherine's Dad, and they were brother and sister. Nooooooot quite, but close...)  Anyway, Lewis gets my BLACK SHEEP OF THE 1800's award for flocking with a relative. From http://www.comedyontap.com/jhause/family2a.html a list of claim awards from the Veterans of New York: 13,478 House, Lewis Canada $73.00

Notes for James House:

  • I am descended from James through his son Isaac. I believe James is a son or brother of Conrad, Harmanus, or George House from the naming patterns of these families and the fact that they were all UEL. I am having a difficult time proving this.
  • There are early records for a Jacob House that some experienced researchers believe refer to James. I am not certain of this. This Jacob House married Catharine Windecker, daughter of Conrad Windecker.
  • In "Niagara Baptisms by Reverend Addison", there are a James and Catherine House who baptized two children, Frederick and Christina, in 1795. This is very likely the Frederick House who is brother to Isaac who lived in Dansville, and his birth year supports this. This information does provide some evidence that James's wife was named Catharine, (the only evidence I have found besides the Reformed Church baptisms and marriage records for Catharine and Jacob). See Mohawk Compendium for info.
  • I have not been able to find a date of death, but his son Isaac was adopted by his brother Frederick in 1820 so it may have been that year, but four of the children applied for land grants in 1841 so it also may be around that year.
  • A letter I received from the Fort Erie Museum has given me some insight, from 1954 from another House researcher who had anecdotal information from the daughter of James's son Lewis referring to childhood spent in the Mohawk Valley, I will add the letter as soon as I scan it.
  • George House is the only House in the 1828 Census of Bertie, but the 1828 Census of Clinton Ontario has many Houses on it.
  • Petition of James House (Bertie) of May 28, 1796 at Niagara: "That your petitioner was late of  Barton's Corps, came into the Province in 1787 with his wife and four children. He has received  200 acres, and has settled thereon and cultivated and improved same. He wants an additional 350  Acres." A witness swore that James House had served in Col. Barton's and likewise Col. Watson's  Light Infantry for and during the space of five years as a Private Soldier in said Corps, and that he  had a wife and six children (in 1796). (He was recommended for 100 acres, May 28, 1796.)  According to Dr. W.G. Rieve's collection, also Fryer and Smy's Roster of Butler's Rangers, he was  granted 550 acres of land in Humberstone Twp. in 1797.
  • Grace Stubbs-Rice Church Records, in the Cornell University Library collection in Ithaca, N.Y:  "Married in the Dutch Reformed Church of German Flats March 2, 1784, Jacob Conr. Hauss and  Catherine Corn. Winekker (also found on Mormons' International Genealogical Index, IGI)."

  2. John Conrad House. He was born on 12 May 1788 in Schneidersbusch, Mohawk  Valley, New York. Baptism on 10 Jan 1789 in Dutch Reformed Church, St.  Johnsville, Montgomery, NY. He married Polly Hegedorn. They were married on  11 Jun 1816[8]. Notes for John Conrad House:  General Notes: John House: Married by Robert Nelles, J.P. of Grimsby. Petition of July 25, 1820: "That your petitioner, John House of Waterloo Twp.,  yeoman, is the son of Jacob House of the Twp. of Bertie, an enrolled U.E. Loyalist;   wants 200 acres of Waste Lands of the Crown." A witness swears that John House   was alive and residing in the Twp. of Waterloo on July 21, 1820. An affidavit of  July 11, 1816 states that he did his duty during the late War. In December, 1828, he is a Private in the 4th Gore Militia, aged 35.
  3. Frederick House. He was born 1795. Baptism 1796 in Niagara. His death on 14  Nov 1844 in North Dansville, Livingston, New York (Burial Greenmount  Cemetery Dansville, NY).

  8. Isaac Alexander House[23, 24, 25]. He was born on 24 May 1807 in Ontario, Canada  [26, 23, 27]. Vital 1832 in Lincoln, Ontario [28]. He married Sarah Ann Tiffany. They  were married on 06 May 1832 in Grimsby, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada[29, 30, 8].  Residence 1891 in Lincoln and Niagara, Ontario, Canada[26, 28]. He died on 16 Aug  1895 in Lincoln, Ontario, Canada[31, 24]. Occupation was Carpenter.

The Other Frederick: James' son Frederick was the only son I have found that remained in the US after the rest went to Ontario. He lived in North Dansville, NY. The letter from Ivey House mentioned above substantiates this:

Frederick House-2 (James House-1). He was born 1795. Baptism 1796 in Niagara (son of James and Catharine). His death on 14  Nov 1844 in North Dansville, Livingston, New York (Burial Greenmount Cemetery Dansville,  NY).

Frederick House and Mary Hartman. They had 1 adopted child, who was either Frederick's sister or niece.

Mary Hartman is the daughter of Jacob Hartman and Sarah Katherine Knappenberg. She was  born 1813. She died on 28 Mar 1897 in North Dansville, Livingston, New York. Notes for Mary Hartman:  General Notes: Mary Hartman House Reynale's obituary from the Dansville Express, 01 Apr 1897,  "Mrs. Mary Reynale died at her home on Elizabeth Street Sunday night at the  age of 84 years. She was born in this town and had always resided  here, her father being Jacob Hartman, one of the first settlers in this section. She was twice married- first to Frederick House, who  died 1844, and later to Dr. Wm. H. Reynale, who died in 1870. She  never had children and for the past twenty years she has been cared  for in the tenderest manner by her niece, Miss Frank Eaton. Mrs. Reynale had long been a member of the Presbyterian church, and her  life was full of piety and good deeds. She leaves three sisters- Mrs.  Henry Harrison, of the village, Mrs. Jane Illick of Detroit and Mrs.  Stover, of Amsterdam. The funeral was held from the residence  yesterday afternoon, Rev. Geo. K. Ward officiating."

    1. Eliza M. House[44]. Her birth Jun 1817 in Otsego, Otsego, New York, USA  (Adopted his niece)[45, 44, 46]. Adoption 1834 (By Uncle Frederick House). She  married Henry Hartman. They were married on 04 Jul 1844. Residence 1870 in  Dansville, Livingston, New York, USA[45]. Her death 1879 in North Dansville,  Livingston, New York (Burial Greenmount Cemetery). Obituary of Eliza M. House (Mrs. Henry Hartman) from the Dansville Express dated 15 May1879:"Today, in our beautiful Greenmount cemetery, we have laid all
that was mortal of Eliza M. House, wife of Henry Hartman. She was born
in Otsego, Otsego Co., in June, 1817.-- her uncle, Frederick House,
who in years gone by was a prominent and honored citizen of this
village, adopted her when she was but a child, and with him she came
      to Dansville in 1834,
and July 4th, 1844 was married to Henry Hartman.
She has been a most devoted wife, a most loving mother- few more
faithful can scarcely be found. Of her christian virtues too much
cannot be said. In charity, loving kindness and benevolence she
imitated very closely the example of the Saviour she loved. For
nearly two years her health has been in a precarious state, and yet,
suffering intensely much of the time, and knowing as she did that with
disease of the heart she was liable as almost any moment to be taken
from her loved ones. She maintained a fortitude almost unequalled,
and a patience and resignation many a one might pattern by. But she
suffers no longer. On Tuesday morning, May 13th, surrounded by her
family, she breathed her last, and now, after life's fitful fever, she
sleeps well, Her hope and trust were in God, and we know that He has
taken her to Himself, and that with the dear ones who have preceded
her, she is safe in Heaven. Her funeral was held yesterday from the
family residence, the Rev. P.A. Strobel(of whose church she was a
      member) officiating."[CI:236:?1:CI]

Broken Branch 2: So who is Sarah Jane House?

  1. Sarah Jane House-1. She was born on 25 Sep 1822 in Otsego, Otsego, New York, USA. Her death  on 29 Aug 1890 in North Dansville, Livingston, New York (Burial Greenmount Cemetery). She is buried in the same plot as Eliza House Hartman, adopted daughter of Frederick. Her death notice, which is two sentences long, identifies her as the sister of Frederick House formerly of Dansville. The names of the people in the death notice include the daughter of Rosanna House Adams Dill, listed below. Sarah Jane is living with the Dill Family in Buffalo in the 1850 Census, then she is living with the Hartman family in Dansville in 1880 (widower of Eliza Jane House). Rosanna named one of her daughters 'Sarah Jane" and one of her daughters "Eliza" which suggests the three are sisters. Eliza's listed as a sister to Sarah Jane on the 1880 census, so that suggests she and Rosanna are also sisters, both sisters of Frederick and therefore daughters of James House and either Catharine Windecker or Nancy House, listed below.

I have the following census records for her:

Charles Starr Thomas C Sove, Joseph Tonks p’d 11 Oct 1825 by Surrogate Court Erie Co NY  Frederick House dec’d

So he had quite a large family-  Wife Mary Margaret

Children: Jason,  George,  Jane,  Phoebe,  Catharine,  Angelina, Elizabeth (Halsey),  Sally (Platten),  Mary (Hershey)

Notes:

I believe he is the brother of my own Broken Branch, James House UEL. This has been a very difficult thing to prove.

In 1810 I believe he is the F. House in Buffalo, Ontario County NY next to Jas. House (whom I believe is my ancestor) and J. House, who may be Joseph or John House.

I have a marriage record from Buffalo NY Marriages of a Catherine House to a Joseph Osborne I think- still looking for it, this may be Frederick's daughter to someone related to the Walter Osborne referred to as a friend in Frederick's will.

He is in United Empire Loyalist lists (next to James), was a private in Butler's Rangers (rolls of  Feb. 14, 1780), and was granted Lot 4, Concession 3 of Humberstone Twp., next to James House's  land grant. He did not file a petition for land as a U.E.L., and probably never lived in Ontario.

I have found an 1820 Buffalo Census entry for a Jared House who may be the same person as the Jason in this will. The census record is very poorly reprinted and almost illegible. I have only seen the abstract of this will, not the original document, which I am trying to get.

Mary Margaret.

Broken Branch 5: Nancy L. House

Generation 1: Nancy L. House and unknown spouse. They had 9 children according to the 1855/1865 Census of North Dansville in which she is living with Eliza M. House Hartman and her family, as a widow (mother of 9 children). She is listed as Eliza's mother. From Eliza's obituary we learn that Eliza was adopted at a young age by her "uncle" Frederick, who may have been her brother instead. Sarah Jane House who is living with both Eliza and then Rosanna House Dill in later censuses, is listed as Eliza's sister. This would make Eliza, Sarah Jane, Rosanna, and Frederick siblings, however the information in Eliza's obituary suggests that she and Frederick were not siblings but uncle and niece. Clarissa House was born in Buffalo around 1806 which makes it likely she is part of one of the three families listed there in 1810, all of whom are related I believe, since Rosanna has named one of her daughters Clarissa I am speculating that Clarissa may also be a sister.

Nancy L. House-1. She was born on 21 Jan 1783 in Vermont, USA[1]. Residence 1870 in  Dansville, Livingston, New York, USA[1]. Her death on 03 Sep 1871 in North Dansville, Livingston,  New York (Burial Greenmount Cemetery).

    1. Eliza M. House[2]. Her birth Jun 1817 in Otsego, Otsego, New York, USA  (Adopted his niece)[3, 2, 4]. Adoption 1834 (By Uncle Frederick House). She  married Henry Hartman. They were married on 04 Jul 1844. Residence 1870 in  Dansville, Livingston, New York, USA[3]. Her death 1879 in North Dansville,  Livingston, New York (Burial Greenmount Cemetery).
    2. Sarah Jane House. She was born on 25 Sep 1822 in Otsego, Otsego, New York,  USA. Her death on 29 Aug 1890 in North Dansville, Livingston, New York (Burial  Greenmount Cemetery).
    3. Rosanna House[5, 6, 7]. She was born Bet. 1808–1813 in New York[8]. She  married James Harvey Adams. They were married on 19 Dec 1824[5, 7].  Residence 1880  in Buffalo, Erie, New York, United States[9]. She died 19 Sept 1894 in  Buffalo, New York.
    4. Clarissa House[10, 11]. She was born 1806. Residence 1852 in Norfolk County,   Canada West (Ontario), Canada[10]. She died on 24 Nov 1882 in Saginaw,  Saginaw Co., Michigan[12].

Generation 2: Henry Hartman and Eliza M. House. They were married on 04 Jul 1844. They had 4 children.

Eliza M. House-2 (Nancy L. House-1)[2]. Her birth Jun 1817 in Otsego, Otsego, New York, USA  (Adopted his niece)[3, 2, 4]. Adoption 1834 (By Uncle Frederick House). Residence 1870 in  Dansville, Livingston, New York, USA[3]. Her death 1879 in North Dansville, Livingston, New York  (Burial Greenmount Cemetery).

Notes for Eliza M. House:  General Notes: Obituary of Eliza M. House (Mrs. Henry Hartman) from the Dansville Express dated 15 May  1879:

"Today, in our beautiful Greenmount cemetery, we have laid all  that was mortal of Eliza M. House, wife of Henry Hartman. She was born  in Otsego, Otsego Co., in June, 1817.- - her uncle, Frederick House,  who in years gone by was a prominent and honored citizen of this  village, adopted her when she was but a child, and with him she came  to Dansville in 1834,  and July 4th, 1844 was married to Henry Hartman.  She has been a most devoted wife, a most loving mother- few more  faithful can scarcely be found. Of her christian virtues too much  cannot be said. In charity, loving kindness and benevolence she  imitated very closely the example of the Saviour she loved. For  nearly two years her health has been in a precarious state, and yet,  suffering intensely much of the time, and knowing as she did that with  disease of the heart she was liable as almost any moment to be taken  from her loved ones. She maintained a fortitude almost unequalled,  and a patience and resignation many a one might pattern by. But she  suffers no longer. On Tuesday morning, May 13th, surrounded by her  family, she breathed her last, and now, after life's fitful fever, she sleeps well, Her hope and trust were in God, and we know that He has  taken her to Himself, and that with the dear ones who have preceded  her, she is safe in Heaven. Her funeral was held yesterday from the  family residence, the Rev. P.A. Strobel(of whose church she was a  member) officiating."[CI:236:?1:CI]

Henry Hartman is the son of <No name> and <No name>[13, 14, 15, 16]. He was born 1819 in New  York, USA[13, 4, 16]. Residence 1860 in North Dansville, Livingston, New York[13]. He died 1891.

    1. Ida Hartman. She was born on 11 Nov 1854 in North Dansville, Livingston, New  York[4, 15]. She married Lansing Banker Grant. They were married on 30 Apr 1879.  Residence 1880 in North Dansville, Livingston, New York[4, 15]. She died on 26  Nov 1894.
    2. Orville T Hartman[17, 15]. He was born 1847 in North Dansville, Livingston, New  York[18, 19, 17, 15]. Residence 1880 in North Dansville, Livingston, New York[18, 15]. He  married Rose J Carr. They were married on 25 Jan 1880 in Buffalo, Erie, New  York, USA[17]. His death 1926 (Burial Greenmount Cemetery).
    3. Reynale Hartman[15]. He was born 1858 in North Dansville, Livingston, New York  [15]. Residence 1880 in North Dansville, Livingston, New York [15].
    4. John Hartman. He was born 1849 in North Dansville, Livingston, New York. His  death 1926 (Burial Greenmount Cemetery).

Generation 2: John Depew Van Norman and Clarissa House. They had 7 children.

Clarissa House-2 (Nancy L. House?-1)[10, 11]. She was born 1806. Residence 1852 in Norfolk  County, Canada West (Ontario), Canada[10]. She died on 24 Nov 1882 in Saginaw, Saginaw Co.,  Michigan[12]. I believe Clarissa may have been a sister to Rosanna House Adams Dill, Eliza House Hartman, and Sarah Jane House. Rosanna's ties to Eliza and Sarah Jane are fairly obvious- Eliza's son Orville is living with Rosanna's family in 1870, Sarah Jane is living with Rosanna and Eliza in different census years (1850, 1880). Clarissa ties in because she was married in Buffalo 14 May 1825, where Rosanna was also married, in 1824.

John Depew Van Norman[10, 11]. He was born 1798 in New Jersey[10, 11, 29]. Residence 1852 in  Norfolk County, Canada West (Ontario), Canada[10].

    1. J.W. Van Norman[10]. He was born 1826 in New York. Residence 1852 in Norfolk  County, Canada West (Ontario), Canada[10].
    2. Louisa Van Norman[10]. She was born 1831 in New York. Residence 1852 in  Norfolk County, Canada West (Ontario), Canada[10].
    3. Abraham Van Norman[10]. He was born 1832 in New York. Residence 1852 in  Norfolk County, Canada West (Ontario), Canada[10].
    4. Clarissa Van Norman[10]. She was born 1835 in New York. Residence 1852 in  Norfolk County, Canada West (Ontario), Canada[10].
    5. Nancy Van Norman[10]. She was born 1838 in New York. Residence 1852 in  Norfolk County, Canada West (Ontario), Canada[10].
    6. Romaine Van Norman[10, 30, 31]. Vital 1842 in Norfolk County, Ontario[32]. He was  born 1843 in New York[33, 31]. Residence 1852 in Norfolk County, Canada West  (Ontario), Canada[10, 32, 30, 31].
    7. John H. Van Norman. He was born 1828 in Canada.
